Update on Campbell

David Woods of the Indianapolis Star is reporting that Pete Campbell will be out for an "indefinite period" of time due to a knee sprain.

This is a big loss for the Bulldogs as Campbell is a main threat from behind the three point arc. The Bulldogs have a plethora of talent that will allow them to continue playing basketball at their current level without Campbell. At their current level, another player on the team will step up each game while he is absent.

So, who should start in place of Campbell?

Matt Howard is a logical choice after the Ohio State game. He scores a majority of his points in the post something other players on the team do not. This will provide more options for shots in the beginning of the game besides the trey. This is important for the road games as getting an early lead and keeping it will keep the crowd out of the game. The crowd is a tremendous benefit for the home team (Detroit and Wright State this week) as their fans will be fired up to to support their team in the game against Butler. The Bulldogs will experience this the entire year due to the fact they are the favorite to win the league and (assuming this keeps up) are in the top 25.

What do you think, who should start in Campbell's place and why?

Zach Hahn-- I don't see both Matt Howard and Streicher starting. They are both excellent players, and could start. I see Zach Hahn starting though so that Matt Howard can avoid trouble and come off the bench to play that Butler defense.

if you both didn't read the rest of the story, it said they are also considering Veasley

I think that's it's got to be Veasley. Howard had a fantastic game against OSU, but he has a history of foul trouble. Veasley has a lot of experience with this team, which would allow Howard to continue to come off the bench in a support role. I definitely think we'll see one of these two players.

Woods was giving his opinion on the question on who should start. He was giving reasons why Veasley should start.

We definitely cannot start Hahn because we do not have a big man capable of grabbing over 10 boards a game on his own. If we started Hahn then we would be starting three guards. Despite that working for some teams in the past (most recently Villanova who played the floor with as many as four guards), we just do not have the athleticism necessary to do that. Campbell might not be a great rebounder or defender, but he is 6'7". Howard, the Horizon League player of the week, would be the most logical choice, but Josh is right that he gets into foul trouble. Veasley is short for a forward, but he is a terrific defender with tremendous athleticism. He also has experience with the unit and has proven himself in the past. Willie would get my vote.

Personally I believe that Matt Howard is the choice that I think would be best served for the Dawgs. My reasoning behind this is that someone is going to have to compensate for Campbell's scoring and even though he is not a great rebounder he is able to get to many rebounds due to his size that we would lack starting either Willie or Zach. Matt does seem to be having a problem getting into foul trouble, but this is something that he seems to be getting better with, and is something that will come with playing time. Willie would also be a good choice but I see a need for him as the energy guy off the bench and also he would give us something that would be lacking if he started, that would be someone with experience coming off the bench which can help calm down some of the freshman he is going to be out there with.
